“The Woodstock of Politics”
– a caller to The Young Turks radio filibuster for filibuster,
about the grassroots Alito activism.
– a caller to The Young Turks radio filibuster for filibuster,
about the grassroots Alito activism.
Sorry it took so long, but here’s the comprehensive game plan for WEEKEND activism. Please take time tonight and Sunday to fill up Senatorial inboxes.
There is a wonderful thing about calling your Senator on a weekend: HIS OFFICE IS CLOSED AND CANNOT ASK YOU YOUR ADDRESS. Leave a voicemail saying you’re a constituent (it’s true – you’re an American), and want a filibuster. They’ll believe you. Take advantage of it. Emails have the same benefit.
There will be a Monday Morning Game Plan waiting for you when you wake up Monday morning, and everyone should be awake and caffeine-fueled by 8:00 a.m. Eastern time to hammer these guys ALL DAY MONDAY before the 4:30 pm (Eastern) cloture vote.
WHAT MAKES THIS RESOURCE SPECIAL? Easy: it has the LOCAL DISTRICT OFFICE CONTACT INFO FOR EVERY KEY SENATOR. And their emails. And all their fax numbers. So fill up their Washington voicemail inboxes. Then fill up every district office inbox. Then fill up every fax machine. Then send emails to every one. Then sign the petitions and auto-faxes at the bottom of this post. YOU CAN GET YOUR MESSAGE TO ONE SENATOR TEN TIMES INSTEAD OF JUST ONCE. And they won’t know whether you’re one stupidly dogged person, or ten different people. Leverage, folks, leverage.
WHAT TO SAY: When you call, fax, and email, don’t waste time explaining why you don’t like Alito. Just make your points and get off the line so someone else can get through.
What do we say?
1. We are the hardworking Democratic base, and we are sick to our souls of supporting incumbent Democrats who don’t have the courage to stand up and do the right thing even when it’s hard.
2. We want a filibuster EVEN IF THERE AREN’T 41 GUARANTEED VOTES supporting it, and EVEN IF IT MEANS FACING THE NUCLEAR OPTION.
3. If they aren’t willing to vote against cloture, then ASK THEM TO SIMPLY ABSTAIN – preferably, go visit veterans at Walter Reed Hospital at 4:30 Monday when the cloture vote takes place. ABSTAINING IS AS GOOD AS A “NO” VOTE ON CLOTURE.
If they ask for your zip code or address, give it. Some people advise giving false, local info (basically, just riffing on the area code and zip code info for that Senator’s local office); I’ll leave that up to you and your personal decision as to whether it’s immoral or whether it’s a necessary act of civil disobedience. Personally, I’m being honest, emphatic and sincere.
ENOUGH BLATHER. HERE IT IS: THE WEEKEND GAME PLAN
FIRST, click on the poll and auto-fax links here, here, and here to get your message out quickly and easily.
SECOND, call the Democratic National Committee at 202-863-8000 and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at 202-224-2447. You can also fax the DSCC at 202-969-0354 and email it at info@dscc.org. Tell them you’re a Democratic activist who is disheartened by the lack of courage in Washington, that you feel like giving up, and that your donations, and the hours of footwork you invest to elect Democrats every other November, are hinging on whether the Alito filibuster succeeds. Tell them you’ll support Nader before you’ll support a Vichy Democrat, and you want to see your damn party show some backbone for a change.
THIRD, call each Senator’s voicemails – first DC, then their main local number, then each branch office number – and leave a voicemail on each one. IF YOU GET A MESSAGE SAYING ANY MAILBOX IS FULL, PLEASE POST A COMMENT HERE WITH DETAILS AND I’LL CROSS THAT NUMBER OFF THE LIST.
FOURTH, when the voicemails are full, start sending emails. Again, if you get a message saying the Senator’s mailbox is full, please post a comment here and I’ll cross that email off the list.
FIFTH, send a fax, especially if you live in that Senator’s state. If you don’t have a fax machine, there are fax websites here and here. You also might have faxing software in your Windows or Mac OS. Again, if you get a message saying the fax is out of paper, post a comment and I’ll cross that email off the list too.
SIXTH, check back here between 8 am and 9 am Monday morning for that day’s game plan. I’ll have updated info on each Senator’s status.
Our goal? By Monday morning, to fill every voicemail, email, and fax machine, in every key Senator’s Washington AND District offices, to overflowing. Then rinse and repeat.
******************
HERE ARE THE SENATORS COMMITTED TO FILIBUSTER: DON’T BOTHER THEM UNTIL TUESDAY, WHEN YOU’LL CALL TO SAY THANKS:
Kerry, John (D-MA) (Filibuster leader)
Kennedy, Ted (D-MA) (Filibuster co-leader)
Boxer, Barbara (D-CA)
Feingold, Russ (D-WI)
Feinstein, Dianne (D-CA)(she was AGAINST filibuster, but we’ve changed her mind!!)
Dodd, Christopher (D-CT)
Durbin, Dick (D- IL)
Sarbanes, Paul (D- MD)
Stabenow, Debbie (D-MI)(she was waffling, but we brought her around!!)
Clinton, Hillary (D-NY)(she was against filibuster, then we hammered her office, and now she says she was never against filibuster and will support it!!)
Wyden, Ron (D-OR)
WEAK SISTERS:
These are Dems who say they support the filibuster, but may be undercutting it behind the scenes. Thank them for their support and generally lend them a backbone!
Reid, Harry (D-NV) is pro-life but is the Democratic Leader in the Senate. Be nice. He initially was against a filibuster, and probably screwed us before we started by calling this as a “conscience vote” instead of a “party line” vote. But now he says he’ll support Kerry and Kennedy, though he doesn’t think it’s winnable. Our message: it IS winnable if he would only change this to a “party line” party-discipline vote and lean hard on the Vichys!! Let him know the base cares more about this one than he realized at the beginning.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Biden told Wolf Blitzer this morning that he WILL support the filibuster for "one more round" of debate. This would deny Bush his glory moment in the State of the Union on Tuesday night and is a good thing. But he still needs to be convinced to keep it going, not just one more round. I'm moving him from "Leaning Against Filibuster" to "Weak Sister." Now, call and praise him for his courage, to keep that temporary spine in place!)

UNDECIDED, AND NEED PRESSURE:
Menendez, Robert (D-NJ): SUNDAY UPDATE:I had put Menendez down as pro-filibuster. However, latest reports are that he won’t say his position, either on the floor vote or on the filibuster, until he gives his floor speech on Monday. Menendez is America’s newest Senator – appointed to fill a vacant seat just this month – and will be up for reelection in November. Let’s get him started on the right foot: as a warrior for justice, not as a triangulating polltaking Vichy. Hammer away!! Let him know what we need in order to support him in November, and that our support is indeed at stake!

Lautenberg, Frank (D-NJ)(SUNDAY UPDATE: Lautenberg's spokesman says he has no doubt filibuster will fail on Monday. Fatalistic loser! Make it clear that it'll only fail if we let it fail, and insist that he support the filibuster! If you're Italian -- no, I'm not kidding -- also make it clear that you won't hold it against him at the polls for not supporting Alito as another Italian. It's come up. Jeebus.)

I used the fax service you posted that tried to work http://www.tpc.int (freefax wouldn't work at all!)
It took a very long time to choose who to send to and only 2 of 57 were confirmed!
Oh well...I hope the message is getting through somehow...
IT IS GOOD NEWS THAT THE EMAIL AND & fax machines are full though.
My message:
"Stand up and fight senators, or at least abstain!
If you don't do something now there'll be no choice but armed revolution to get our rights back!!!"
Great resource! Thanks for all your work. It's about time the democrats found their spine.
Biden on CNN just now said he would vote "this one time" to continue debate. He will vote NO on cloture on Monday.
Saturday's Philly Inky
oth of New Jersey's U.S. senators said yesterday that it was premature to support the Kennedy-Kerry call for a filibuster, because they had not announced their intentions on the vote for Samuel A. Alito Jr.'s nomination.
Matthew Miller, a spokesman forSen. Robert Menendez, said the country's newest senator planned to announce his intentions on voting for or against Alito, a fellow New Jerseyan, in a floor speech Monday.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg's spokesman, Alex Formuzis, expressed doubt that a filibuster would materialize. "As far as we know," he said, "there will be a vote for cloture on Monday, and that it will pass, and the Senate will move to vote on the nomination of Mr. Alito on Tuesday."
Monday morning these two need to be hammered. The mailbox of all Lautenberg's offices are currently (Sunday Noon) full.
Regarding Mark Dayton. Dayton is leaving the Senate in November. According to the Kennedy conf call (via Suburban Guerrilla):
Kennedy said the press coverage has convinced many senators that supporting a filibuster will be seen as obstructionism, saying, “Look what happened to Tom Daschle.” The holdouts are the ones who think they risk losing at the polls.
Dayton cannot use this excuse. There is NO REASON he cannot stand up with his party on this and vote NO.
Abby:
Thanks for all the comments keeping me up to date. It's earlier here on the West Coast than it is in DC and NY, where a lot of the other blogs are, so I can't update at the same time they do (though I WILL do so tomorrow, because it's such a big day).
I've always had Obama as a weak sister, and he still is, supporting the filibuster only reluctantly.
Biden is newly, partially on board, and I've moved him up to "weak sisters."
I hadn't heard about Schumer and will look into that. Thanks!
Finally, I'm getting my stuff from the Alito 48, newsblog, Eschaton's comment threads, google news, watching TV, and my own phone calls to Senators' offices. Just FWIW. Yes, I'm standing on the shoulders of giants, but more than one of them!
Keep calling -- thanks for your hard work and for keeping me up to speed.
Oh, yeah, I already had Schumer down as a "weak sister" -- pro filibuster but not necessarily beating up on his colleagues to do the same. That's different than either wholehearted endorsement by someone who's otherwise not that influential, or active lobbying by someone who is, which is why I created a category for the "tepid powerful" like Schumer.
Washington voicemail seems to be full for all I've called so far. I'm having more luck with local offices.
The email for Biden didn't work but this one does http://biden.senate.gov/contact/emailjoe.cfm
A typical letter to Jeffords:
Dear Sen. Jeffords,
as the only independent in the Senate, your political actions speak to your vision above the two party fray that is unfortunately US politics. The Alito confirmation is no different in this perspective. It is about allowing the concentration of power to the executive with no restraint from the other branches of power. You must uphold the spirit of the Constitution as you have sworn to. Please oppose the effective confirmation of Alito, in whatever fashion suits you best. A no on the confirmation but a yes on the cloture does not help, on the contrary it enables the confirmation. Please strongly consider a no vote on cloture, or at least an abstention. It is unbelievable how close we are to destroying the delicate balance of our democratic institutions with this nomination of Alito. Oh and don't buy into the "everyone deserves an up or down vote" GOP spin, since their own Miers was denied such process, obviously for political reasons relating to the GOP religious base.
Thanks for carefully considering these words, and for your commitment to representative democracy,
Sincerely,
Dr. Martin Bowen

Thanks for the feedback on the emails. None of the regular email (as opposed to webmail) links worked, due to yours truly's html coding ignorance. I got them all fixed, though, so clicking on emails should now bring up your regular email software!
Thanks again.
Thank you for providing this information. I have contacted each and every senator by e-mail or through their government web sites, and shall now begin calling by phone. (Freefax would not work for me either.)

Thank you for this. I wrote to all 37 and tailored each one individually either to the Senator or to the state. And I appealed to all of the New Englanders to uphold our strong independent streak. You made it very easy to do and I appreciate your effort.
With all due respect, Thirsites, you SAID you would UPDATE -- and you did NOT. Schumer is YES on filibuster. Obama is YES on filibuster. It is not YOUR job to withhold their names from that list because they are not as enthusiastic as You'd like them to be. Why waste folks' time to call people who have already pledged yes? What kind of an operation are you running here? What is your real name in life? Why did you delete that message in which I asked you about why you have no email contact link on this site? I am copying this message and posting it to several links to let them know that you seem to be Hi-jacking this effort -- urging folks to show up for marching orders early Monday morning. Here you are, a general -- with NO NAME -- saying you will keep updating -- AND You DON'T -- posting Right Wing Ads -- I dunno
My father's been at Walter Reed on several occasions of late, and if he realized that you were suggesting that Democrat Senators use him and other sick and/or wounded military personnel as "cover" for their attempts to slow the nomination of a qualified Supreme Court nominee, he would be as disgusted as I am.
Is there no low that you people won't sink to?
As of 6:30 a.m. Eastern this morning (1/30) ALL of Senator Bill Nelson's mailboxes are full -- Orlando, Tallahassee and DC. I sent him an e-mail and will call after offices open.
Thanks for all your hard work on this. I don't know what our chances are for success, but I feel much better having made an effort, and I appreciate your providing the resource and tactics.

funny how the first 2 freeper posts I've seen here arrive AFTER my post....

Ah, a concern troll... the cutest, cuddliest kind of all!
1. I accurately portrayed Obama and Schumer: as agreeing reluctantly to vote "no" on cloture BUT as working against it behind the scenes. Obama, in particular, is all over the news dissing the effort. That made it worthwhile to call and convince him the effort is REALLY worth supporting.
2. "Abby" with no last name, no email and no homepage challenges me to know my real name? Sure. Scott.
3. I didn't delete any messages, but I won't subject myself to spam by putting my email here. Every comment is forwarded to me anyway.
4. What kind of operation am I running, and am I hijacking the effort? Hmm. I'm getting about 700 hits a day, with long average visits. If every visitor makes an average of 5 calls, that's over 3,000 calls a day. I feel pretty good!
5. I'm not posting any right wing ads. Google AdSense does seem to run the occasional conservative ad on their bar as their bot tries to figure out what I am!
twm expresses disgust at my suggestion that Senators visit Walter Reed, and "Anonymous" asks: is there no low you people won't sink to? That from a man whose hero, the President, hasn't had the personal empathy or the political courage to attend even ONE military funeral. Well over 2,000 Americans die, and we're still flying them in by night, barring photographers, shipping them to their families as CARGO on commercial jets, and not one of their families has had the President attend a funeral... the first President in history to be AWOL in that role.
So, to answer your question: I have my limits, but suggesting Senators visit wounded vets instead of helping establish fascism in America is a noble concept, not a low one, and I'm proud to suggest it.
But I do appreciate knowing how our intentions could be misunderstood, and I've corrected the top post to more accurately reflect my views.
Just setting the record straight.
Everyone else, thanks for the good work, and keep it up!
I'll just answer one point in the silly previous post: "anonymous" (aren't they all!) said: The president has spent more time than Clinton ever did with military families
Clinton didn't start an unnecessary war generating over 2,000 American casualties. He didn't have as much occasion to spend time with military families as Bush does. It's like saying that Typhoid Mary spent more time around sick people, and calling her a saint.
And the truth remains: Bush has never attended a military funeral. Clinton did. Bush ordered all military caskets be flown to Dover at night, then shipped to families as commercial cargo. Clinton never did.
But it's OK that you like Bush so much. I don't hold it against you. Most Germans supported Hitler, too, at first. He made them feel really powerful and special and good.
I'd like to bring up two assertions invented by the logical/moral retards:
1. Bush and his republicans are comparable to Hitler and his Nazis.
2. A political party that loses ground in the senate as well as the presidency gets to demand "consensus" judicial candidates.
