Here's the good news: SIX DAYS AGO I started this site to start identifying and harassing the Vichy Dems in Congress and in the statehouses. A couple of days after that, I decided to help organize resources for the filibuster debate. Today alone, as of this writing, this site has received over 5,500 hits, most staying long enough to make a few calls or to print the Game Plans. We got over 8,000 hits just in the last four days. Together, I estimate we made between 10,000 and 50,000 phone calls, faxes and emails. Hell, we even attracted conservative trolls, which is always a sign that one is on the right track! That's astounding. That's powerful. If even a few of you will hang around after today, we can keep the inertia and make a difference in our Party and in our Nation.

Here's the bad news: So many Democrats defected that the final vote on the filibuster was 72 for cloture, 25 against. Republican Jim DeMint is on the Senate floor now, riffing on our defeat to accuse Democrats of moral failure on everything from ANWR to Iraq. Imagine: a freshman Senator lecturing Ted Kennedy on moral politics!

72-25. Most Americans won't have any idea how close this issue really was. And the ones that do understand how "duck and cover" politics work, are learning the lesson that Democrats are cowards who, when the count starts to go against them by 2 or 3 votes, will run for cover instead of stand on principle. Any question why the Rs keep kicking our ass?

But all is not lost. Sports teams have what are called "rebuilding years." Instead of having losing season after losing season, 5-6, 5-6, they make a decision to sacrifice now to win in the future. They fire the marginal players, bring new guys on board, winnow them out, eat a season or two with only 2 or 3 wins, but come out with a stronger team and win championships.

I started this site because I got so sick of the Vichy Democrats that I realized I was willing to risk losing again in 2006, if that was what was required to throw out the Liebermans, Ben Nelsons and Inouyes and replace them with real leaders. Maybe we can do both: win a majority and replace the weak links. But I'm confident that if we can winnow the ranks and install some Dems with courage, voters will respond by giving us overwhelming victories. Voters reward testosterone. They will reward us if we're bold, and they'll NEVER respond to us if we fold, 72-25, while the Constitution burns.

Over the next couple of days I am going to post detailed analysis of who was a Vichy in this battle, and who responded to our concerns. I am going to float some strategies for taking our party back -- for without a real party, we'll never get the country back to where it should be. I'll consider practical politics -- for example, hitting the most susceptible Vichys, like Joe Lieberman, hard in the primaries, yet backing almost all Democrats who survivie the primaries when it comes to the general elections. But I don't want to talk to myself. I need to have several people willing to sign on as "team members" and do their own posts, and others to comments, criticize, challenge, improve, and inform those ideas.

In other words, what I want to do is take those 8,000 hits and turn the people behind them into truly engaged citizens, working on this forum to make sure that debacles like this never happen again. The Vichys have awakened a sleeping giant. They have no clue that we're as angry at them as we are at Bush. But they're going to learn, very soon, what the consequences of today's betrayals mean when it comes to fundraising, ground troops, and votes on election day. We can make a huge difference, and the Alito filibuster was the start -- our Boston Tea Party, our March On Selma, our Stonewall.

So what, in the end, am I asking? That you follow the new Game Plan for Taking Our Country Back:

First, keep coming back here and sounding off about what you think, feel, and want to do about what happened today. We should have more comments over the next week than we did last week, because now we have time to think and type and share ideas.

Second, let me know if you'd like to be added as a "team member" able to contribute to this site. I'd like to have several blogs working here, overlapping, sharing ideas and arguing and hashing out a game plan. I said here back on Day One that this was a "communitarian" blog. Anyone who has (or can) demonstrate that they're responsible and serious can become a blogger here. Just lodge a comment here with your disguised "{at}" type email address, and I'll set things up (then I'll delete the comment quickly to keep it away from the trolls). (I've tried posting my address, but the trolls picked it up right away -- luckily for you, I'm the one they want to harass!)

Third, and this isn't exactly tangible but IS important: think hard about how you can improve the Democratic Party at the national, state, and local levels. Know what? Today proved that our party sucks. But history proves that our party really has better ideas than the opposition. We beat theDepression, we won World War II, we finally established civil rights laws, we passed the first "good government" laws, we created safe workplaces, we balanced the budget. Every good development in American history over the past century, we did. So why are we so fucked up now, and how can we get the mojo back? Please think about it, tell us your ideas here, and then get ready to ACT in your own communities.

I know. This is a long ramble from a guy who's had a martini before 3 in the afternoon. But it's what I always wanted from this site, and it's the only way I can think of to move forward instead of jumping off something really high onto someplace really hard and jumbly. So please, take me seriously. Systematically work through steps 1-3 above, and we'll turn this debacle into a movement that changes the world. No shit.

And, I really am going to post more detailed after-action reports on the filibuster, the traitorious Gang of 14 that screwed us, etc., so it's worth checking back here off and on over the next few days even if you think all the rah-rah stuff above is hooey.

MONDAY: SHORT STROKES

Blogger is bogging down under all the edits and traffic the last post is getting, so I need to start a new one as we reach the endgame.

Current status: The Republicans are down to 54 Party votes, with John Ensign in a car accident (not seriously injured, thankfully, but unable to attend). Independent Jim Jeffords supports the filibuster, as does Mark Dayton, and Tom Harkin will abstain.

Joe Lieberman has been jerking us around: for the filibuster, against the filibuster, not sure about the filibuster, what's a filibuster again?

On the downside, Kent Conrad is solidly against it. And we've definitely lost Ben Nelson; it's not worth calling him anymore, but we'll replace him with a real patriot during his next primary!

The Gang of 14 is meeting or has met, and likely is investigating whether they can reach a deal before the vote in less than 40 minutes. They don't understand that we WANT the nuclear showdown, and I fear a compromise that undermines everything we've done. So the message for the next half hour needs to be directed at the swing votes on the Gang of 14 and a handful of others, and it needs to say: WE'RE NOT AFRAID OF A NUCLEAR SHOWDOWN. SHOW SOME GUTS FOR A CHANGE. EITHER SUPPORT THE FILIBUSTER, OR ABSTAIN.

In all those ways, we've already won. But let's keep working to win the filibuster, too!

MONDAY ALITO FILIBUSTER GAMEPLAN: URGE ABSTINENCE!

Big recent developments: Four up, one down, one big fracking sissy: Republican Senator John Ensign in car accident, unable to attend cloture vote -- that's effectively one more for our side! Independent Jim Jeffords commits to support the filibuster! Tom Harkin will abstain from the cloture vote! Dayton will vote no on cloture. On the downside, Kent Conrad is solidly against filibuster. Joe Lieberman is waffling big-time: several staffer have confirmed to me and others that he is voting AGAINST filibuster, but now they're back to saying he's undecided. I'm putting him back on the "call" list, but I gotta say: Damn. Damn. Damn. His. Vichy. Soul. (See the entire site's slogan, above.)

First, THANK YOU for your hard work over the weekend! As far as I can tell, all key Senators' D.C. voicemails, and over 90% of the voicemails in their various District offices, were filled up by the end of the weekend. I started hitting random extensions and leaving messages for poor hapless staffers. Every Senator will get the message on Monday morning. Awesome!


For today, I want to back away from the shotgun petitions. It's frustrating that no one in the Dem leadership will tell us who the "Alito 8" are (the Democrats who aren't hewing the party line), and we don't know how well Kerry and Kennedy are doing at moving them around to our side. But we can make an educated guess, and focus on those key Senators. In addition to calling their offices, we're also going to target their re-election campaign HQs. (A great idea thought up by our friend and fellow-traveler, Bob Fertik!) Finally, we're going to hammer away at a simple, but politically powerful, message.


Our theme today is: Lead, Follow, Or Get Out of the Way. In political terms, that's:

EITHER SUPPORT THE FILIBUSTER
OR ABSTAIN FROM THE CLOTURE VOTE,
BUT DON'T GET IN OUR WAY.

The plan is simple:

FIRST, as each office opens (8:30 or 9 am Eastern, later for District offices as you move West), call every office (DC and District) of YOUR OWN Democratic Senators and urge them to support the filibuster by either voting NO on cloture or by ABSTAINING from the cloture vote. Be short and sweet but hit every office listed below. (If they're not listed here, they're probably not a problem -- but feel free to make sure!) If you can get their staff to commit to a position, please post a comment here.

SECOND, call the "URGE ABSTENTION" Senators identified immediately below and do the same -- say that you hope they vote NO on cloture this afternoon but if they can't, urge them to ABSTAIN from the cloture vote by doing something good that most Republicans would never do, like visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital instead. (God knows the Republican leadership would never want to draw any attention to the costs of their war!) Doing so will be just as good as a "no" vote but will give them political cover with their conservative voters back home. Again, call their DC AND District offices. And again, if their staff will commit to a position on cloture and/or abstention, please post a comment here.

THIRD, rinse and repeat. That is, go through the "Urge Abstention" list twice, at least for those offices that don't take detailed caller info like names and addresses.

That's it. Simply hammer your own Senators and the key Senators. Report back so I can keep things updated. Then watch C-Span at 4:30 Eastern to see what happens! (And please check back here on Tuesday for an after-action report and a strategy for dealing with the result. Win or lose, we are taking this momentum forward to win back our Party and our Nation.)

AGAIN: THANK YOU for doing Yeoman's work the past few days! You folks are restoring my faith in America. No kidding. Sorry it took so long, but here’s the comprehensive game plan for WEEKEND activism. Please take time tonight and Sunday to fill up Senatorial inboxes.

There is a wonderful thing about calling your Senator on a weekend: HIS OFFICE IS CLOSED AND CANNOT ASK YOU YOUR ADDRESS. Leave a voicemail saying you’re a constituent (it’s true – you’re an American), and want a filibuster. They’ll believe you. Take advantage of it. Emails have the same benefit.

There will be a Monday Morning Game Plan waiting for you when you wake up Monday morning, and everyone should be awake and caffeine-fueled by 8:00 a.m. Eastern time to hammer these guys ALL DAY MONDAY before the 4:30 pm (Eastern) cloture vote.

WHAT MAKES THIS RESOURCE SPECIAL? Easy: it has the LOCAL DISTRICT OFFICE CONTACT INFO FOR EVERY KEY SENATOR. And their emails. And all their fax numbers. So fill up their Washington voicemail inboxes. Then fill up every district office inbox. Then fill up every fax machine. Then send emails to every one. Then sign the petitions and auto-faxes at the bottom of this post. YOU CAN GET YOUR MESSAGE TO ONE SENATOR TEN TIMES INSTEAD OF JUST ONCE. And they won’t know whether you’re one stupidly dogged person, or ten different people. Leverage, folks, leverage.

WHAT TO SAY: When you call, fax, and email, don’t waste time explaining why you don’t like Alito. Just make your points and get off the line so someone else can get through.

What do we say?

1. We are the hardworking Democratic base, and we are sick to our souls of supporting incumbent Democrats who don’t have the courage to stand up and do the right thing even when it’s hard.

2. We want a filibuster EVEN IF THERE AREN’T 41 GUARANTEED VOTES supporting it, and EVEN IF IT MEANS FACING THE NUCLEAR OPTION.

3. If they aren’t willing to vote against cloture, then ASK THEM TO SIMPLY ABSTAIN – preferably, go visit veterans at Walter Reed Hospital at 4:30 Monday when the cloture vote takes place. ABSTAINING IS AS GOOD AS A “NO” VOTE ON CLOTURE.

If they ask for your zip code or address, give it. Some people advise giving false, local info (basically, just riffing on the area code and zip code info for that Senator’s local office); I’ll leave that up to you and your personal decision as to whether it’s immoral or whether it’s a necessary act of civil disobedience. Personally, I’m being honest, emphatic and sincere.

ENOUGH BLATHER. HERE IT IS: THE WEEKEND GAME PLAN

FIRST, click on the poll and auto-fax links here, here, and here to get your message out quickly and easily.

SECOND, call the Democratic National Committee at 202-863-8000 and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at 202-224-2447. You can also fax the DSCC at 202-969-0354 and email it at info@dscc.org. Tell them you’re a Democratic activist who is disheartened by the lack of courage in Washington, that you feel like giving up, and that your donations, and the hours of footwork you invest to elect Democrats every other November, are hinging on whether the Alito filibuster succeeds. Tell them you’ll support Nader before you’ll support a Vichy Democrat, and you want to see your damn party show some backbone for a change.

THIRD, call each Senator’s voicemails – first DC, then their main local number, then each branch office number – and leave a voicemail on each one. IF YOU GET A MESSAGE SAYING ANY MAILBOX IS FULL, PLEASE POST A COMMENT HERE WITH DETAILS AND I’LL CROSS THAT NUMBER OFF THE LIST.

FOURTH, when the voicemails are full, start sending emails. Again, if you get a message saying the Senator’s mailbox is full, please post a comment here and I’ll cross that email off the list.

FIFTH, send a fax, especially if you live in that Senator’s state. If you don’t have a fax machine, there are fax websites here and here. You also might have faxing software in your Windows or Mac OS. Again, if you get a message saying the fax is out of paper, post a comment and I’ll cross that email off the list too.

SIXTH, check back here between 8 am and 9 am Monday morning for that day’s game plan. I’ll have updated info on each Senator’s status.

Our goal? By Monday morning, to fill every voicemail, email, and fax machine, in every key Senator’s Washington AND District offices, to overflowing. Then rinse and repeat.

Here's What VichyDems Will Do This Weekend...

Sorry to be silent for the past half-day; sleep, daughter needing to go to friend's house, etc. The damn non-virtual world...

Here's my plan for the site:

Sometime in the next few hours, I'll put up a new "game plan" list of key senators, with their voicemail and fax numbers and email links. The idea will be that Saturday night and all day Sunday, we'll fill their VMs to overflowing, then fill their email boxes to overflowing, then start sending ridiculous numbers of faxes. If readers will keep me updated, I'll try to indicate whose VMs are full, whose inboxes are full, etc. as it happens.

Then, starting at about 5 am my time (8 am Eastern) Monday morning, when the DC offices start opening again, we'll go back to live phone calls to real people, to FLOOD them with calls all the way to the 4:30 pm cloture vote.

OVERVIEW: Senate Minority Leader made a huge blunder by telling the Democrats that Alito is a “conscience vote” instead of calling for party unity. Nevertheless, John Kerry is considering leading a filibuster – but wants to know he has 41 votes first. The current vote count says he’d lose: we don’t have 41 votes to avoid cloture. We need to help him find those votes.

So, here's the game plan:

First, sign and e-circulate the John Kerry filibuster petition.

Second, start making phone calls. The Capitol switchboard, toll-free, is: 888-355-3588. Even over the weekend, fill the voicemail boxes. Then we'll start with emails (I'll post those links later).

Call the right people, tell them you want a filibuster of Alito, and that you’re paying attention to which Democrats really fight and which ones just pay lip service. Ask for a filibuster even if there aren’t a guaranteed 41 votes against cloture, because at least we could see clearly which Democrats are real fighters, and which ones are Vichy accommodationists who need to be replaced in their next primaries.

Here are the details of how the key Senators break down:

Weak-Kneed Scotus-Lickers:
Three Democratic Senators have announced they will vote to confirm Alito. I doubt they can be convinced BOTH to change that vote AND to support a filibuster, so don’t waste much time on them, but one call to give them a ration of shit might be worthwhile. They are:

Pasty-Polled Fencesplitters:
Six Democratic Senators now are splitting the difference, suggesting in various ways that they oppose Alito BUT WON’T SUPPORT A FILIBUSTER. We need to work hard to change their minds, because a vote for cloture (i.e., against filibuster) IS a vote for Alito. Hammer them with calls and emails. These “I was against Alito before I was for him” Senators are:

Obama, Barack (D-IL). Obama is "rumored" to be OPPOSING any filibuster for "strategic reasons." We must tell him to stop fighting Kerry and SUPPORT a filibuster.

Landrieu, Mary (V-LA)

Salazar, Ken (V-CO) (Late Friday: Staffer insists he's definitely not supporting a filibuster. Pester him for the hell of it but don't waste much time. He makes the Vichy list of Dems to unseat for being unresponsive to his base.)

Joe Biden (DE) (remind him that if he wants to be President, he needs our votes in the primaries, and WE WANT A FILIBUSTER NO MATTER WHAT.

Dorgan, Byron (ND)(Actually, Dorgan says he OPPOSES A FILIBUSTER and MIGHT EVEN SUPPORT ALITO. Hammer him.)

Conrad, Kent (ND), who was undecided, said on Ed Schultz that he is AGAINST filibuster and MIGHT EVEN SUPPORT ALITO. Let's punish him. Remind him of Tom Daschle, who took an “accommodationist” stance and lost his seat as a result.

Unknown Quantities: Make Them Take A Stand:
Several other Democratic Senators MIGHT oppose a filibuster; we just don’t know. We need to call their offices, ask whether they’ll support a filibuster, and pester them until they commit to it. A full vote from the Senate may not come until next Tuesday, the day of President Bush's State of the Union address. Republicans hope for a confirmation vote by Friday, though Democrats have declined to guarantee one.

Republicans say the delay is the result of Democrats hoping to prevent a victory for the president before his address, but one aide to a Democratic Judiciary Committee member said he thought Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist may be holding off because some Republicans will be in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum.

Spoke Reid's office. No news as to whether he will support filibuster even without 41 votes. But I told the nice woman that the blogs are very active about this right now and want a filibuster with or without the votes to avoid cloture.

Feinstein Back On the Fence

Just spoke to Feinstein's office. Good news is, whereas she previously said she would not support a filibuster, her nice young man now says she's undecided.

Bad news is, he also said that it takes 41 votes "to start a filibuster, and right now they're not there." I told him that's not true, it takes 41 votes to SUSTAIN a filibuster, but only one person to start one.

I also told him that Sen. Feinstein's name was being hotly discussed on blogs with hundreds of thousands of hits a day, and she's being called a traitor Democrat who can't be trusted to do the right thing. He said he'd be sure to pass that on.

Clinton's Office Confirms She Won't Filibuster

Just spoke to someone in Hillary's office. She opposes Alito, but has briefed her staff to say "there simply are not enough votes to sustain a filibuster at the moment" and that "there also is the looming threat of the nuclear option" and they don't want to give the Rs more power to "rubber stamp" things for the next 3 years.

I asked the nice lady to tell the Senator that her position is cowardice. There are real Democrats and there are Vichy Democrats, and it's time to stand up.

If she doesn't change her mind, then it's official: Hillary Clinton, for saying she wouldn't filibuster even if she could for fear of the "nuclear option", is a Neville-Chamberlain-wanking, Vichy-water-loving, fascsist-enabling traitor.

Welcome to the Vichy Democrats Blog

After the Nazis conquered France in WWII, the French responded in one of three main ways. Some fled the country in order to continue resisting the Nazis, either by fighting on the side of the Allies or by participating in a French government-in-exile. Some remained in France and supported the Resistance, living their lives as well as they could but undercutting the Nazi occupiers at every opportunity.

And then there were the Vichy French: politicians and toadies more interested in gaining and preserving power than standing on principle. They formed a government that pretended to represent the French people, but which was sanctioned by the Nazis and was in every important way subservient to them.

Many Democratic politicians are the same: they pretend to be Democrats, to represent Democrats, to oppose the fascistic branch of the Republican Party that currently holds power -- but in reality, Vichy Dems are accommodationists, more interested in retaining their political positions than in actually representing Democratic values or defending American liberties.

This site is dedicated to exposing them and bringing them down: the traitors to the Democratic Party, the Republican-lites, the lefty-neocons, the Iraq War apologists. The Vichy Dems.

Better to elect Republicans than them, because they poison the party. (Remember Zell Miller at the Republican Convention?) Better still to support true Progressives to unseat Vichy incumbents in the primaries. Best of all, to elect true Progressives whenever we can.
